Let's hope Nelson Cruz is throwing a train-themed pool party for this 35th birthday
Today is Nelson Cruz's 35th birthday and the least we could do is thank him for all of the dingers he's given us this year.
The man they call "Boomstick" is currently the leading vote-getter in the designated hitter spot for the American League in the 2015 All-Star Game, probably thanks to his AL-leading 19 home runs.
Cruz wasted little time getting started in 2015, homering in five consecutive games in just the second week of the season. Three days later, he homered twice in one game and delivered a walk-off win for the Mariners.

To follow that up, he launched a home run (his 10th of the year) that traveled a Statcast-estimated 483-feet (the longest in MLB in 2015) to conclude April. When the Mariners visited the Astros in May, he mashed one onto the Minute Maid park train tracks.
You'd think that would be enough, right? On May 27, Cruz blasted a homer into the fish tank at Tropicana Field probably because home runs were starting to get too straightforward, and Cruz needed a special target.
Basically, his home runs could throw him a train-themed pool party if they wanted to. That's less the work of a designated hitter and more the resume of a designated masher/smasher/ball destroyer. He's even put his skills to use in the field this season.
And so, on this 35th anniversary of the birth of Nelson Cruz, let us thank him for all of the dingers over fences, onto train tracks and into pools by marveling at his raw power.
