On this day in 1929, the Yankees announced they would be the first team to add numbers on the backs of their uniforms

Quick: What number was Babe Ruth? How about Ted Williams? Cal Ripken?

Hopefully you got all of those. If not, you've very much upset me. I'm probably crying.

Numbers have gone hand-in-hand with iconic ballplayers for years, and we wouldn't even have them if it weren't for the Yankees' decision to initiate their use on Jan. 22, 1929. Other organizations had tried putting numbers on their sleeves before this date, but it never lasted.

The Bombers announced they would put digits on their backs based on where players batted in the order -- Babe Ruth No. 3, Lou Gehrig No. 4, and so on. By 1931, all American League teams had numbers and by 1933, every NL team did the same.

Best number/player combo in my opinion? Has to be this guy's.

How about you?
