18th-inning madness in Tampa Bay: When games go long, players get weird
On Friday, the Rays took the field against the Orioles at 7:10 p.m ET. Little did they know, they were about to play the longest game in club history, lasting 18 innings -- that is, two complete games of baseball -- and nearly seven hours. 21 pitchers (an MLB record) took the mound as the showdown stretched well past the Trop's collective bedtime.
Unsurprisingly, things got kind of weird.
A sleep-deprived Luke "Chewbacca" Scott decided to display his Wookiee pride:
While Gene Simmons (also known as Jamey Wright) made a rare cameo appearance in the Rays dugout:
Chris Dickerson didn't have a costume, so he resourcefully constructed a water bottle rally cap -- as well as, for reasons that remain unclear, a couple of cup pyramids:
Broadcaster Orestes Destrade even accepted a late-night back massage from a generous fan:
Finally, in the bottom of the 18th, David DeJesus hit an RBI single to win the game 5-4 for his Rays, reaffirming their lead in the AL Wild Card race. Appropriately, the marathon culminated in one of the most deliriously happy walk-off celebrations in history:
Way to play, Chewie.
