Rays' Richie Shaffer hits first homer, gets silent treatment, celebrates with imaginary friends

Rays' Shaffer hits first HR, gets silent treatment

Richie Shaffer, playing in just his second career game for the Rays on Tuesday night, tallied his first MLB hit. And wouldn't you know it, it was of the home run-variety. Unfortunately, when Shaffer got back to the dugout, his teammates gave him the ol' silent treatment. Don't worry, "teammates." Richie can hit home runs by himself and Richie can celebrate those home runs by himself.

Those are some cool friends, Richie.

MLB.com's Bill Chastain talked to the Rays' 11th-ranked prospect after the game:

"It was awesome," Shaffer said. "I knew they were going to do something. So I go in there and no one's looking at me or talking to me, so I gave some fake high-fives and handshakes to everyone. And they had their little ring going and I made my way down there and everyone was going nuts. It was an awesome experience. Everyone was having fun."

Eventually, the dugout gave the rookie his proper congratulatory noogies.
