This week in Minor League Baseball Promotions: It's 'Miracle on Ice' Night!
There are three certainties in life: death, taxes and most importantly, Minor League promotions. MiLB.com's Ben Hill has the inside scoop on the last of those certainties, and he'll be sharing a taste with us each and every week. On Saturday, the Rochester Red Wings are staging a promotion that's ice cold and pure gold.
Frontier Field, home of the Red Wings, will host "Miracle on Ice Night," which pays tribute to the 35th anniversary of USA's stunning upset over the USSR in the hockey semifinals at the Lake Placid Winter Olympics. Both the Red Wings and visiting Syracuse Chiefs will suit up in USA hockey-themed jerseys (the home team in white and road team in blue), with the umpires wearing black-and-white-striped referee jerseys.
Three members of that beloved squad -- Mike Ramsey, John Harrington and Ken Morrow -- will be in attendance, signing autographs and "shooting" ceremonial first pitches with a hockey stick. Ramsey, Harrington and Morrow will also autograph all of the players' jerseys after the games. The jerseys will then be auctioned off for charity.
In addition to staging a bevy of hockey-themed between-innings contests (winners receive replica gold medals), the Red Wings are telling fans that "they should be prepared to leave with more than they came with." Giveaways include a "Relive the Miracle" puck (first 1500 fans) and a reprint of the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle front page from the day after the "Miracle on Ice" occurred:
Finally, the Red Wings are offering a one-night-only "Hat Trick" at the concession stand: a half-pound cheeseburger, quarter-pound hot dog and a one-third-pound Italian sausage, all on a sub roll:
In a night celebrating one of the greatest upsets of all time, this just might result in an "upset" stomach.
