Padres radio announcer calls two sports in one day, recounts his most terrifying travel experience

Ted Leitner shares most terrifying travel experience

Longtime Padres broadcaster Ted Leitner had his hands full on Saturday, but it wasn't trying to keep up with Giants pitcher Madison Bumgarner, who retired the first 23 hitters and was on track for a perfect game.

You see, the Padres/Giants tilt at AT&T Park was actually the second game that Leitner called on Saturday.

Earlier, Leitner, who has been the voice of San Diego State University football and basketball since 1978, called the Aztecs' non-conference football game across the bay at Memorial Stadium in Berkeley against the California Bears.

The football game started at 2 p.m. and the baseball game began at 6:05 p.m., which caused a few anxious moments for Leitner, now in his 36th season calling games for the Padres.

"I always think about college overtime, which takes a while. I thought maybe I'd call Uber when I get out there but with 50,000 people at the game, but if even there's 120 Ubers waiting, I'm going to be there a while," Leitner said.

As it turned out, Leitner didn't have to worry. Cal rolled up a 35-7 victory and the second half rolled along smoothly.

"This particular game was a blowout by the fourth quarter … so Cal was running the ball by then and the clock was moving, it worked out -- unfortunately for the Aztecs," Leitner said.

Leitner needed only to cover 13.5 miles from Memorial Stadium to AT&T Park, as the crow flies, but a much harder proposition in Bay Area traffic. But he hired a car service, hoofed it a half-mile to the car and made his way to the ballpark. Even with the snarl of California roadways.

Leitner walked into the visiting broadcast booth to join partner Bob Scanlan at the top of the second inning. Bumgarner settled for a one-hitter as the Padres lost, 8-0. And Leitner got a good night's sleep.

"It actually worked out smoothly," he said.

That hasn't always been the case, as Leitner has a handful of stories of September doubleheaders with both Aztecs football and Padres baseball on the same day.

"I had one in the '80s. There was a makeup doubleheader in San Diego and I was doing football in Laramie [the Aztecs were at the University of Wyoming] and I chartered a single-engine plane to fly over the Rockies to Denver to take a commercial flight," Leitner said.

"That was harrowing. The pilot had this old bomber jacket on, I was sitting in the co-pilot seat. I look over and he's sweating bullets. I was thinking, 'We're going to die. I was young and stupid then. I wouldn't do that now."

That experience probably made his travels on Saturday seem rather mundane, but welcome nonetheless.

"So this was a piece of cake," Leitner said, smiling.
