That time that Lou Piniella and Carlton Fisk got into a fist fight on top of home plate

Carlton Fisk is most fondly remembered for waving his iconic home run inside the foul pole at Fenway Park in Game 6 of the 1975 World Series.

Lou Piniella is mostly known as the ill-tempered skipper whose managerial career started in the late '80s, lasted for two decades and included a 1990 World Series championship with the Reds and a 116-win regular season with the '01 Mariners.

On May 20, 1976, Fisk and Piniella's careers literally collided in one of the more memorable (and regrettable) brawls in MLB history. Piniella -- then an outfielder/DH for the Yankees -- tried to barrel through Fisk to score on a base hit. When the two became entangled, a full-on fist fight broke out at the plate.

Both benches (and bullpens) emptied as the fracas spilled up the baseline and out into the field. Sadly, one of those fights included a scuffle between Yankees third baseman Graig Nettles and Red Sox pitcher Bill Lee, which led to Lee suffering a broken collarbone. While he pitched in six more MLB seasons, he never returned to his previous form.
