The Question: Is Jason Varitek a Hall of Famer?

The raw numbers -- .256 average over 15 seasons, 1,307 hits, 193 home runs -- may not scream Hall of Famer. Perhaps neither do his three All-Star appearances, one Silver Slugger Award and one Gold Glove.

But there's always been a different stigma about certain types of players.

There tends to be a lingering thought about how numbers cannot quantify one player's meaning to his team, importance to his era; the type of heart and soul that makes a catcher who was never fleet of foot nor a stalwart with the glove such an invaluable member of two World Series championship teams.

If you ask Red Sox fans, Jason Varitek had all that.

The Captain's legacy in Boston will be forever great, enough that the Fenway faithful brought him to tears during Saturday's pregame ceremony, but is that enough to earn enshrinement in Cooperstown?

You make the call.
