There's buried treasure beneath the Astrodome and no one knows how to find it

There's buried treasure beneath the Astrodome

Anyone who's seen the 2008 Matthew McConaughey/Kate Hudson film Fool's Gold (and c'mon -- who hasn't?) knows that treasure hunting is no ordinary business. The lure of long-lost commodities brings out the worst in competitive treasure hunters, plus you've got the seedy underbelly of society, romantic troubles and situational hijinks to worry about.

Fingers crossed that those problems don't befall Harris County Judge Ed Emmett and the sheriff's bomb squad that he's enlisted to help track down a time capsule supposedly buried under the foundation of the Astrodome 52 years ago.

The Houston Chronicle has the full story of the extensive search for the loot rumored to be buried somewhere near home plate in the building that served as Houston's professional baseball home from 1965-99.

[Astros historian Mike Acosta] thinks the capsule might be four or five feet deep. But the sheriff's equipment should be able to detect it at that depth.

On Thursday the bomb squad identified several possible locations where the time capsule could be. Sheriff's officials began mapping the floor behind the home plate area, one little square at a time.

The deputies remained steady and focused, Acosta said, but for him the whole endeavor "has a 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' type of feel to it. It's very archaeological."

We'll give them another week or two, but then we're hopping a plane to Houston and giving Nathan Drake a call.
