Throwback Postseason Photo of the Day: Kirk Gibson hits World Series walk-off homer

Photo: Gibson wins World Series Game 1 with walk-off

26 years ago today, Kirk Gibson wasn't supposed to play in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series. The outfielder was actually watching his Dodgers teammates battle the A's on a clubhouse TV -- getting treatment for multiple leg injuries he'd suffered in the NLCS.

But with L.A. down one with two outs and a man on first in the bottom of the ninth inning, Gibson, perhaps responding to a doubtful Vin Scully, iced his legs, grabbed a bat and made his way into the dugout. He was called on to pinch-hit for the pitcher, stepped into the batter's box against All-Star closer Dennis Eckersley, and well, you know the rest ...

The Dodgers won the Series in five games and the walk-off home run would be Gibson's lone Fall Classic at-bat that year. Hey, if you're gonna have one, you might as well make it memorable.
