Twins retire legendary skipper Kelly's No. 10

Tom Kelly, who managed the Twins for 15 seasons, had his No. 10 jersey retired at Target Field on Saturday.

The Minnesota-born (though New Jersey-raised) manager's first full season at the helm was 1987. That year saw the Twins claim the World Series championship -- the franchise's first since 1924, when it was known as the Washington Senators.

Kelly also led the team to the 1991 World Series -- a legendary seven-game clash with the Atlanta Braves that saw five one-run games, three extra-inning battles and four that were decided in the final at-bat. At the end, Kelly's Twins were again triumphant.

Kelly remained Minnesota's skipper until 2001, by which point he had amassed a franchise-record 1,140 wins. Minnesota's current manager, Ron Gardenhire, had this to say about his predecessor.
