Ryan Zimmerman dodges broken bat, starts amazing double play
Three different Nationals needed to do their jobs to perfection in order to turn this broken-bat ground ball from Braves center fielder B.J. Upton into a double play.
Let's break it down:
1. Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman would need to field the ball while dodging the broken bat flying at his face.
2. Second baseman Anthony Rendon would have to catch Zimmerman's no-doubt imperfect throw (he was evading an enormous flying splinter, after all), and then make a smooth relay to first base -- all while avoiding a sliding Jason Heyward.
3. First baseman Adam LaRoche had to catch Rendon's throw while keeping his foot on the bag in order to catch the speedy Upton by a hair.
All of those things happened -- and yes, it's an amazing GIF:
