Vin Scully took a break from baseball to praise the sun and moon with beautiful soliloquy

Scully praises sun and moon with beautiful soliloquy

One day after Vin Scully announced his return for a 67th season behind the mic for the Dodgers, leading fans to write romantic poetry about the wordsmith, Scully was back in the booth writing his own verse about the wonders of the natural world.

For this is Vin Scully and this is what he does. Like the baseball version of William Wordsworth, Scully first paid homage to the sun -- even though Los Angeles is in the middle of a heat wave, making life miserable for at least one Cut4 West Coast correspondent who may or may not be writing this post.

As the Dodgers took on the Cubs on Saturday night, Scully said:

"Thank you, Mr. Sun for your warmth. Look forward to seeing you in the morning. You have certainly done your job in keeping us warm."

And really, when you think about it, is that all that different from Robert Louis Stevenson's "Summer Sun"?

"Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy's inmost nook."

Later, once the sun had bid California adieu, Scully was back at it, this time saying hello to the thing that hits your eye like a big pizza pie.

Scully said, "Look at Mr. Moon. He's almost embarrassed to look that good. Or maybe he's just shy."

However, for once Vin may have gotten it a little wrong. For the sun wasn't saying goodbye and the moon wasn't being shy. No, for just as Scully was praising them, they too were surely honoring the voice of the Dodgers.

Or, as modern poet and future poet laureaute Chris Martin once wrote

"Look at the stars. Look how they shine for you. And everything that you do."
