Walk-off home runs are worth roughly $5,000 in Philadelphia
Jonathan Papelbon left the Citizen Bank Park mound in disgust Saturday after allowing two runs and blowing his first save of the season against the Rays. Entering the clubhouse, the Phillies' closer had a message for his teammates:
"Whoever walks this guy off, I'll give 'em five grand," Papelbon said.
"I didn't think Jim would do it right off the bat," Papelbon quipped. "I just wrote him a check for $5,000."
And after becoming the king of walk-off blasts in MLB history, Thome had one distinct thought on his mind as he crossed home plate - he mouthed "I want that check" to Papelbon.
