Watch rare footage of MLB's 1934 Tour of Japan
Can't wait until 4 a.m. ET to watch the MLB All-Stars take on Samurai Japan? Did MLB's thrilling 8-7 victory on Tuesday only whet your appetite?
Then you're in luck. Because the Hall of Fame recently digitized footage of the 1934 Tour of Japan filmed by Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. While MLB players had toured Japan previously, the '34 tour stands out thanks to one man: Babe Ruth.
But Ruth and Foxx weren't the only superstars to make the tour. The two were joined by Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez and Charlie Gehringer among others, with the legendary Connie Mack brought along to manage the club.
It was also during this tour that Moe Berg showed off the skills that would lead him to becoming a spy during World War II. While in Tokyo, Berg snuck to the top of a nearby hospital with a movie camera hidden under his kimono to surreptiously film the surrounding area.
While this year's tour should offer some thrilling matchups between the MLB All-Stars and Samurai Japan, that wasn't the case during the '34 tour. In that year's series, the MLB side won all 22 games, outscoring their Japanese opponents, 250 - 45.
