Span sits out game with left hip tightness

April 5th, 2017

PHOENIX -- With the season only one game old, circumstances required the Giants to compensate for an injury.
Manager Bruce Bochy said before Tuesday night's rematch against the Arizona Diamondbacks that center fielder needed rest due to a tight left hip, the same one that was surgically repaired in 2015. Bochy described Span's condition as day to day and expressed hope that he will rejoin the lineup Wednesday.
Rather than shuffle the batting order, Bochy simply installed , Span's replacement, at the leadoff spot.
• The Giants were close to signing outfielder , an eight-year Major League veteran, to help provide Minor League depth. Stubbs has compiled a .244 career batting average for six teams, most notably Cincinnati (2009-12). He played for Atlanta, Texas and Baltimore last year while hitting .225 in 59 games.
• Bochy said outfielders (hamstring), (quadriceps) and catcher (ankle) are recovering from their respective injuries at the Giants' training complex in Scottsdale, Ariz., but aren't ready for any sort of game competition yet.
• Bochy fondly remembered Katy Feeney, a top media relations official with Major League Baseball whose death was announced Sunday. Feeney's father was Chub Feeney, the Giants' head of baseball operations from 1946-69 before he became National League president. "It breaks my heart," Bochy said. "It's a loss for the game and a loss for the players." A moment of silence was observed for Feeney at Chase Field on Tuesday before the singing of the national anthem.
