Pedroia to undergo tests on sprained left wrist

After collision with White Sox Abreu, Red Sox second baseman exits game

CHICAGO -- After a 5-4 loss to the White Sox on Monday, the Red Sox sent second baseman back to Boston to have his sprained left wrist examined.
The tests will include an MRI. X-rays taken at Guaranteed Rate Field came back negative. The injury was caused by the collision Pedroia had with first baseman in the top of the first.
"Really no speculation on [the severity of] it," said Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski. "We'll just wait and see what happens."
On a grounder to Abreu, White Sox pitcher seemed late getting to the bag. Abreu then sprinted over himself to record the out, and he dove onto the bag to make sure he got there on time.
The problem for Pedroia is that it left him with nowhere to run as he got to the base, and he tripped over Abreu's sizable frame.
"A real freakish play at first base, and when he went over Abreu, he tried to brace his fall on that left wrist," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "It's hard to say but until we get more information, we'll know then. I think anytime you're dealing with a position player's wrist, a hitter's wrist, that's always cause for concern."
It was Pedroia's idea to undergo further testing in Boston, rather than having an MRI in Chicago.
"He feels he knows those guys, they know him well. We felt it would be more comfortable for him to do that. He wanted to do that, too," said Dombrowski. "He knows those guys well. We figured he wanted to do that, so we said, 'Sure, we'll fly you there and get the MRI done there.'"
Pedroia has had some left knee issues this season after having surgery in the offseason. The wrist is an entirely new injury.
"Well, I don't really know a whole lot about the situation. But Pedey is a huge part of our identity and who we are," said Red Sox lefty , who took a no-decision in his return from the disabled list. "We're definitely going to miss him until he's back, but we have guys that are going to fill that spot. We have a lot of confidence in those guys as well."
Josh Rutledge and are the internal roster replacements for Pedroia. could be an option as well when he returns from the disabled list.
"I don't want to think negative," said right fielder . "Keep everything positive and hope everything is fine."
