Berra coined a Yogism when congratulating Bench
When Johnny Bench broke Yogi Berra's record of 305 career home runs by a catcher on July 15, 1980, it would have been understandable if the Yankees great was a little miffed. After all, who wants to lose their home run title? However, not only did Berra, who was a coach for the Yankees at the time, happily congratulate the Reds catcher with a telegram, he even managed to include an at-the-time brand new Yogism for good measure.
As Berra told Bench in the telegram, which Bench shared on Wednesday morning, "I always thought the record would stand until it was broken."
