Mets GM Sandy Alderson admitted he's looking for a new shortstop while reporting for jury duty

Mets GM admitted to needing new shortstop in court

Don't worry -- Mets GM Sandy Alderson wasn't in court for anything he did wrong, like talking in an elevator. But while serving his jury duty on Feb. 3, and presumably while under oath, Alderson admitted to needing a shortstop. Which is something that never came up in "12 Angry Men."

Here's how the actual courtroom conversation went down:

Question: What do you do for a living?

Alderson: I'm the general manager of the New York Mets.

Question: What does your spouse do?

Alderson: Actually, my wife's sitting right behind me.

Question: What do you do in your free time?

Alderson: Well, now I'm looking for a shortstop.

Alderson admitted afterwards that he was joking, though I'm wondering how long he had practiced that line before having an excuse to use it.

It also turns out that making roster construction jokes are not a great ploy if you're looking to get out of jury duty. Both he and his wife ended up serving on the three-day trial before heading down to Florida for Spring Training.
