The Nationals' diving, deflected, barehanded 3-4-1 putout may be the play of 2015

Nationals make crazy 3-4-1 putout after deflection

There are a lot of ways to create a memorable defensive highlight. You could field a ball after a deflection, maybe, or elevate for a leaping grab, or make a slick barehanded stab and throw, or come up with a diving catch. Or, if you're the Nationals, you could just combine all of the above during Saturday's game in San Francisco for one of the most mind-bending plays in recent memory.

No, really, take a deep breath, maybe stretch your legs a little. Ready? OK:

Rendon putout

Much as we do love the art of scorekeeping, "3-4-1" doesn't quite do that thing justice. To recap: Brandon Crawford smacks a sharp grounder into the hole on the right side, and first baseman Clint Robinson dives but only manages to get a piece of it -- no worries, though, because second baseman Anthony Rendon has his back, leaping and snaring the deflection with his bare hand. But he still has to complete the play while moving away from the bag, so he flings it towards first, and pitcher Felipe Rivero makes the diving snag while keeping his foot on the bag.

Whew. Yeah, like we said, 3-4-1. Nothing to see here.
