Shut it down in honor of Derek Bell's 43rd birthday
Derek Bell hit .173 for the Pirates in 2001, so it was no surprise that he had to battle for a spot during Spring Training '02.
Bell was surprised.
So surprised that he said, "If it is [a competition], then I'm going into 'Operation Shutdown.'"
At the end of March, Bell was released and never played in the bigs again. The Bucs wound up paying him $4.5 million not to play for them, and Bell relocated to his yacht.
