Starling Marte triples, then walks off after replay review

The Pirates and Giants played one of baseball's strangest games on Monday, a 13-inning affair that saw a six-run lead evaporate, ducks on the field and the winning run scored on a relief pitcher's sacrifice bunt.

On Tuesday, with the two teams tied at one in the bottom of the ninth, Starling Marte came to the plate with two outs and the bases empty, presumably trying everything in hs power to avoid a similarly wacky fate. But normal endings to games just haven't been in the cards this series.

After hitting a liner off the Clemente Wall in right field, Marte dove head first into third base with a triple. The throw from the cutoff man got away from Pablo Sandoval and, despite the ball landing just a few feet away, Marte sped off towards home plate. His body and Buster Posey's tag arrived at nearly the same moment:

The umpires initially called Marte out, but Pittsburgh challenged the call. Because Marte knows confidence is sexy, he decided to kick back and have a drink rather than get stressed out while the umps reviewed the replay.

But when the video was reviewed and the call overturned, Marte's calm facade disappeared and the Pirates celebrated the walk-off with plenty of fervor.

You'd think the Pirates would be used to these things by now. As Tom Singer pointed out, four of the Pirates' nine home wins this season have come by way of the walk-off.
