Position player Brendan Ryan throws two scoreless

Brendan Ryan is a Yankees infielder with a reputation for stellar defense, quickness on the basepaths and one of the greatest mustaches in MLB's last decade:

He's also, apparently, a pretty good pitcher. The romp was on in the Bronx as the Yanks hosted the Astros on Tuesday. Jason Castro, Evan Gattis, Carlos Gomez and Marwin Gonzalez all homered as the 'Stros posted 15 runs on 13 hits. That's when Joe Girardi called on his utility man.

Ryan came into the game and pitched the eighth and ninth frames. They were both of the shutout variety. In his first inning of work, Ryan gave up two hits, but managed to dispatch Castro, Chris Carter and -- finally -- Carlos Correa to get out of a jam:

His next inning when much smoother as he sat down Colby Rasmus, Gattis and Gomez in order to complete his night:

If Dellin Betances and the Yankees bullpen weren't pitching so well this season, Ryan might have thrown himself into the mix out there.
