Throwback Photo of the Day: Rookie Willie Mays flies in style

There's cool, there's really cool and then there's Willie Mays.

The photo above shows Mays (in an amazing outfit) boarding a flight from Omaha to New York City after receiving a callup to the Giants in May, 1951. Mays had spent the previous 35 games demolishing Triple-A pitching with the Minneapolis Millers to the tune of a .477 average with eight home runs.

The outfielder made his Major League debut on May 25 in Philadelphia, going 0-for-5 with a strikeout in an 8-5 win over the Phillies.

He quickly figured things out, however, earning Rookie of the Year honors and helping the Giants capture the NL pennant. Of course, Mays later went on to earn two MVP awards, 24 All Star appearances, 12 Gold Gloves and one World Series ring.
