If they gave out Gold Glove Awards for umpires, Manny Gonzalez would win for this barehand grab
Back in 2010, Manny Gonzalez became the first Venezuelan MLB umpire. Since then, he's built a bit of a reputation for himself with his cat-like reflexes.
Those reflexes were on full display in the early going on Wednesday when Gonzalez suited up and got behind the plate for the Cubs-Reds game at Wrigley Field. Cubs leadoff hitter Dexter Fowler fouled a ball back off the screen in the first at-bat of the game. The ball bounced back toward the plate and into Gonzalez's peripheral vision, so he stepped over and snagged it with one hand:
We know there's no such thing as the umpire Gold Glove Award, but if it did exist, Gonzalez would be a shoo-in as a finalist in 2015.
