Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Yasiel Puig and other MLB-ers dumped water on their heads to fight ALS

As you can see in the video above, Bryce Harper was one of the latest Major Leaguers to take the #IceBucketChallenge. Just in case you've been away from the internet for a couple of weeks or have just woken up from a 70-year cryo-coma, here's a brief explanation of why young Harper up there is dumping water on himself in an empty ballpark on an overcast day.

Meant to raise awareness of ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, the challenge is fairly simple: Film yourself dumping a bucket of ice water on your head, post it online, and dare a few friends to do the same. If they don't accept, they have to donate to an ALS organization of their choice.

Started by Pete Frates, a 29-year-old sufferer of the disease who was also a star baseball player for Boston College, the campaign has reportedly raised $2.3 million for the ALS Association since July 29.

But Harper is only one of the most recent of baseball's luminaries to participate in the social media phenomenon. Nick Swisher accepted the challenge from his wife, and immediately challenged an odd group of people, including Channing Tatum and Lance Bass:

The Bachelorette winner and former Brewers prospect Josh Murray challenged Ryan Braun:

Who in turn challenged Jonathan Lucroy, Kyle Lohse and Carlos Gomez:

Before he had water dumped on his own head, the Marlins' Steve Cishek offered fans the opportunity to do the same to Giancarlo Stanton:

And fans had their opportunity soon enough:

The Astros' Dallas Keuchel joined in:

As did his teammate L.J. Hoes, who challenged the rest of the Astros in the process:

But it wasn't only players who got involved. Adam Jones made his own video, and challenged Barack Obama, John Boehner, and Buck Showalter:

Mascots didn't want to be left out:

They literally jumped right in:

The Rays Team got into the act and challenged some NFL cheerleaders:

And then they went and used a backhoe. Yes, an actual construction backhoe.
