For seven years, Joba Chamberlain played for the Yankees as a clean shaven pitcher ... save for one dalliance with a mustache last season. Upon joining the Tigers, free from the Yankees facial hair policy, Chamberlain went wild, growing a beard that far surpasses his mustache in both size, mass and sheer quantity of hair.
In the video above, Chamberlain discusses his new bushy friend, admitting that his mustache "wasn't a good look" and that the beard is saving him a "lot of money on razors." An unexpected bonus!
The beard seems to be having an impact on the field, too. Chamberlain's strikeout rate is the highest since his rookie season while his ERA is his lowest since 2011. Is it the change of scenery or are batters intimidated by the wooly mammoth atop his face? That question will be for the historians to figure out.
