In signing of the season, KBO team brings in speedy Pikachu

Signing of the season: KBO team brings in Pikachu

Is it possible that we've already seen the greatest humans ever to play baseball come through our league?

Think about it: In more than 100 years of baseball history, we've seen guys like Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente, Mickey Mantle, Barry Bonds and Mike Trout. That's a remarkable list of players. Is it possible that it just doesn't get any better than that?

Personally, I don't think so. I think the nature of humanity is such that we'll always keep improving, either through advancements in training or in strategy. But, over in the Korean Baseball Organization, it seems as though they may disagree. Judging by the newest free-agent acquisition of one of their teams, they think we've seen all that humanity has to offer when it comes to baseball. To them, the future is with something else:

Pikachu.

For real:

Yes, following a welcoming ceremony for the yellow electric mouse on Saturday, the SK Wyverns of the KBO have announced that the world's most famous Pokemon, Pikachu, is now a member of their team. Or, more precisely, he's a member of their marketing department:

The club started a new marketing campaign last weekend with Pikachu, the fictional character from the Pokemon franchise. The Incheon-based club will now sell merchandise featuring the character and will hold various events featuring it.

The team said that the Pikachu merchandise, which includes hats and T-shirts, will only be sold this season.

OK, so he's only going to stick with the franchise for one season, but that's plenty of time to leave an indelible mark on the team. For example, who could forget Mike Piazza's famous year with the Padres? Or Pedro Martinez's trip around the sun as a member of the Phillies?

PiazzaMartinez

Exactly. Plus, Pikachu is known for being hardworking, loyal and a bit of a prankster -- all of which will ingratiate him to his new fans and teammates.

Even if he takes some getting used to:
