Rajai Davis had to borrow the shirt off his bench coach's back

Rajai Davis had to borrow his bench coach's jersey

Spring Training is a hectic time - you're always on a bus to one city or another, fighting off scorpions and defending yourself against alligators. So perhaps you (if your name is Rajai Davis) might be excused if you left something out of your luggage … like, say, your jersey.

That would explain why the outfielder wasn't wearing his typical no. 20 on Saturday. But even though his usual jersey was missing, Saturday's Tigers-Yankees game didn't have to turn into shirts vs. skins. Detroit bench coach Gene Lamont literally gave Davis the jersey off of his back and gave the rest of us a lesson in real friendship.

""He had some pants, but he didn't have any shirt,' said Lamont. "I thought he'd wear a minor-leaguer's jersey but I don't know. Maybe mine fit better, or maybe he didn't want to give a minor-leaguer a sweaty jersey back if he had to go into the game later."

A good friend will let you borrow his jersey, but a great friend doesn't care if he gets it back all sweaty. And Lamont knows his jersey was more than just protection from the elements.

""If he hit a home run, he'd probably want my number," he said

But to make sure Davis had the correct jersey later, clubhouse manager Jim Schmakel went the extra mile. Literally:

""It's not the first time a player forgot his jersey," Schmakel said. "Maybe the first time it was delayed due to traffic."

But he wasn't too worried about the drive.

"I know how to get there. I know the side streets," he said.
