Santana (15-7, 3.45 ERA) has a 5.40 ERA over his last three outings. Last time out, Santana gave up four runs over five innings in a win over the Royals. He has allowed at least three runs in six of his last seven starts, going 3-0 during that stretch.
Lamet (7-7, 4.32) has pitched well during the second half of his rookie campaign. He has gone at least six innings in six of his last nine starts, posting a 2.55 ERA over that span. In his last start, Lamet held the Cardinals to two runs over six innings in a loss. Lamet hasn't earned a win since Aug. 15, when he beat the Phillies.
Gif: Lamet's slider gets Kemp looking
• Santana has not allowed a hit with two strikes in any of his last 10 innings. Minnesota closer Matt Belisle has the longest active streak at 15 consecutive innings.
• Santana is 3-0 with a 1.77 ERA in five career starts against the Padres, including a complete-game win over them on Aug. 2.

• Opponents are hitting just .136 against Lamet's terrific slider over his last eight starts, but Statcast™ says they should be doing even worse. Based on strikeouts, along with quality of contact (exit velocity and launch angle), Statcast™ estimates opponents should be batting .123 against Lamet's breaking ball -- the fourth-lowest expected average allowed by any qualified starter on sliders since July 29 (min. 40 at-bats).
