A bunt attempt backfired on Jesus Sucre and knocked off his helmet

As its name implies, the sacrifice bunt comes at a cost. In order to advance other runners, the batter must give something up. In most cases, that sacrifice comes in the form of an out at first base.
During the fourth inning of Sunday afternoon's game against the Rangers, Rays catcher Jesús Sucre showed off his interpretation of a sacrifice bunt as his attempt led to the loss of his helmet:

There is only one flaw in Sucre's version of the sacrifice play: The ball was ruled foul and no runners advanced. That isn't to say, however, that there was nothing gained by the loss of Sucre's helmet. We gained the knowledge that helmets are useful protection against balls coming from a variety of directions and Sucre discovered a new way to take off his helmet.
