Ryan Goins singled over the second baseman's head thanks to the umpire's foot

Often one's successes and failures in life are as much the product of luck as they are of ability. Entering his sixth Major League season, Royals middle infielder Ryan Goins clearly possesses plenty of ability as a baseball player. Even so, a little luck never hurts.
During the eighth inning of Tuesday night's 10-1 win over the Giants, Goins hit a grounder toward the second baseman that looked like it could become a potentially inning-ending double play. But then fortune smiled upon Goins:

There was little the umpire could do to avoid Goins' hard-hit ball, but he at least showed off the strength of his foot by sending the ball high into the air and over Andrés Blanco's head.
Thanks in part to that bit of luck, the Royals tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning with Goins coming around to score himself. It may be better to be lucky than good, but it's even better still to be lucky and good.
