GENERAL ELECTION – NOVEMBER 5, 2024

In order to vote in local, state and federal elections, you must be registered to vote. Each state has different rules and deadlines and it is important to understand those rules so that you are able to vote.

The deadline to register for the November 5, 2024 General Election is October 9, 2024. Voter Registration Applications must be postmarked by the registration deadline.

Registration Requirements

  • U.S. Citizen
  • Must be 18 years old to vote in a Consolidated or General Election or 17 years of age to vote in a Consolidated Primary or General Primary if the individual will be 18 by the time of the Consolidated or General Election
  • Must have been a resident of Illinois and your election precinct at least 30 days prior to Election Day
  • You must not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction
  • You may not claim the right to vote anywhere else

How to Register

You may register to vote year-round with the exception of a 27-day period just prior to an election, 16 days prior to an election for online registration and during the two-day period after each election (one-day in Chicago).

    • Online registrations must be completed 16 days before Election Day. October 20, 2024 at 11:59 PM CST for the 2024 General Election.
  • In Person at the Office of Election Authority, at Driver's License Facilities and with Deputy Registrars appointed in each jurisdiction. Registrations must be completed 28 days prior to Election Day – October 8, 2024 for the 2024 General Election.

  • By Mail - Mailed registrations must be postmarked 28 days prior to Election Day – October 8, 2024 for the 2024 General Election.

  • Grace Period Registration »

    • An extension of the regular registration deadline from the 27th day prior to an election through Election Day. Grace period registration is only available in-person at sites authorized by each election authority.
