A day at the park does not consist solely of a baseball game. It's an event, a total American experience. And nowhere is that more evident than at Comerica Park in Detroit.
The Tigers' stadium takes its role as the host of a classic franchise seriously, honoring a deep bench of club legends while celebrating America's pastime with a whole carnival's worth of attractions and flair.
Opened in 2000, Comerica Park greets visitors with huge tiger sculptures and proceeds to thrill them with a water feature in center field, and surprise attractions that would fit in on the midway. Of course, it also offers well-crafted reminders of Detroit's deep baseball roots.
- The rides: There is a carousel where kids (and very big kids) can find themselves atop tigers instead of horses. And, yes, there is also a 50-foot Ferris wheel on the third-base side of the park, complete with cabs fashioned as baseballs.
- The sculptures: Six historically great Tigers are celebrated in left-center field. Legends from Ty Cobb to Al Kaline are depicted in action -- cast in stainless steel and perched atop a wall where their retired numbers are prominently displayed.
