Fernando Abad struck out Adeiny Hechavarria on a completely unexpected 55-mph offspeed pitch

In baseball, it's easy to earn a reputation for something specific. Red Sox reliever Fernando Abad just may be MLB's foremost exhibitor of the "eephus" pitch, as he's proven a few times this season alone.
He added to that legacy in Sunday's 4-1 loss to the Rays, catching Tampa Bay shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria totally off-guard with this 55-mph offering Abad floated up there in the eighth inning:

With that kind of pinpoint control and spot-hitting eephus mastery, there was no real opportunity for Hechavarria -- or anybody else, for that matter -- to have a chance with that one.
And clocking in at approximately 55 mph, this particular Abad pitch was significantly slower than two of the others he's uncorked this season. Witness this 63-mph one used to retire Troy Tulowitzki:

And this 62-mph offering that prompted a classically Adrián Beltré reaction from the Rangers' third baseman:

Wild.
