Javier Baez played a carom off the wall to throw out Stephen Piscotty at second base

As Donald Duck told us in "Mathmagic Land," everything is reduced to math and angles. The endlessly watchable Javier Baez proved the point during the Cubs' 8-2 victory over the Cardinals on Friday afternoon.
In the top of the seventh, Stephen Piscotty hit a ground ball down the left-field line that seemed destined to wind up in the corner for extra bases. But, like a wild mini-golf putt that seems destined for the far reaches of the hole, the ball bounced off the wall and reversed course for the infield. Baez was ready for it. He collected the ball and fired to second to nail the Cardinals outfielder:

Some would say this was the result good hustle. Others would say it was luck. And still others, like Mr. Duck, would just say "math."
