Nomar Garciaparra thinks it's 'kinda cool' Nomar Mazara is out there doing big things for their name

For 14 years, Nomar Garciaparra was a singular talent. He manned shortstop for the Red Sox for many of those years, earning himself a 1997 Rookie of the Year Award, six All-Star selections and a place in Boston sports lore for years to come.
And up until this past season, he was the only player in MLB history to make it to the big leagues with a first name of "Nomar." Nobody else to lace up his cleats did so, ever, until Rangers phenom Nomar Mazara burst onto the scene in 2016 with a head-turning first campaign (note: retired reliever Kiko Calero's middle name is also "Nomar," so he can basically be part of this club too -- but with a footnote).
At Dodgers FanFest on Saturday, the elder Nomar -- now a broadcaster for SportsNet LA -- shared some thoughts on his name and, specifically, how it was "really weird" when he began getting requests to autograph things for young fans named after him:

But, to make this whole "Nomar" situation even more intriguing, Garciaparra's MLB debut was on Aug. 31, 1996. Mazara was born on April 26, 1995. Therefore, there is no logical way to assume Mazara was named after Garciaparra -- meaning that it's just a coincidence that the two share a rather uncommon first name.
Then again, every generation deserves to have its own "Nomar" to root for, right?
