Yasmany Tomas is just the latest player to rob Chris Davis of a home run
Entering Friday night's game against the D-backs, Chris Davis had hit 85 home runs over the past two seasons -- four more than Nelson Cruz and Nolan Arenado for most in the Majors.
Of course, that number would be a little higher if not for some Scooby Doo-like meddling outfielders always getting in the way. Batting in the bottom of the first inning and with two runners on, Davis smashed a ball to right field. Would it be No. 86?
No, instead it would be the sixth home run that Davis was robbed of over the last two seasons after Yasmany Tomás raced back and made the leaping grab.
According to ESPN Stats and Info, not only does Davis lead the Majors with homers being brought back to the field of play, but he doubles that of the second-most unlucky hitter. At this point, you can imagine that the optimistic and pessimistic sides of Davis' brain surely square off anytime he hits a deep drive:
Pessimistic Davis: Aww, geez, what's even the point of trying anymore? They all get robbed! I don't see anyone else getting robbed so often!
Optimistic Davis: Hey, c'mon now. Only way someone can be robbed of so many dingers is by hitting so many balls that could be dingers. That's a good thing!
Pessimistic Davis: Yeah, well, it's still unfair. They should count anyway. I'm just going to give up. That's it. I can't do it anymore. I surrender.
Optimistic Davis: What did Wayne Gretzky say? You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take?
Pessmistic Davis: (in baby voice) Wayne Gwetzky said blah blah blah. That's you.
Optimistic Davis: You're really immature.
At least that's how I'd imagine the conversation would go down.
Of course, the actual Chris Davis is probably just going to get back out there and hit a ball even higher and farther, making it impossible for any human not named Gheorghe Muresan to bring one back over the fence.
