A New Division Built on Inclusion, Joy and Belonging
Junior Giants is proud to partner with Special Olympics Northern California to pilot a new Special Olympics Division, bringing free baseball and softball programming to youth with intellectual disabilities. This division brings together the shared missions of Junior Giants and Special Olympics Northern California: creating inclusive, supportive environments where every young person can grow, belong and thrive.
This pilot represents an important step forward in expanding access to sports and ensuring that all youth—regardless of ability—have the opportunity to play, learn and be part of a team.
About the Partnership
Both Junior Giants and Special Olympics Northern California believe in the power of sports to build confidence, foster friendships, and strengthen communities. By combining our expertise and resources, this partnership is designed to:
- Expand access to organized baseball and softball for youth with intellectual disabilities
- Remove financial barriers by offering programming at no cost to families
- Create safe, welcoming spaces where players feel supported, respected and celebrated
- Promote physical activity, social connection and life skills through sport
What Is the Special Olympics Division?
The Special Olympics Northern California Division is a dedicated division within Junior Giants leagues that is intentionally designed to meet the needs of athletes with intellectual disabilities. This division emphasizes:
- Safety-first programming with appropriate structure and support
- Inclusive coaching focused on encouragement, skill development, and fun
- A noncompetitive, player-centered environment
- Opportunities for athletes to build confidence, independence and teamwork
Each division will operate with trained volunteers and coaches who are committed to creating a positive and empowering experience for every participant.
All youth, including those with intellectual disabilities, are welcome in existing Junior Giants leagues. This division offers a dedicated space for those who prefer it.
Who Can Participate
This division is open to youth with intellectual disabilities who are interested in playing baseball or softball in a supportive, inclusive environment. No prior baseball or softball experience is required.
Why This Matters
Access to sports should never be limited by ability. This pilot division is about more than baseball and softball—it’s about belonging, representation, and opportunity. By creating this space, Junior Giants and Special Olympics Northern California are working together to ensure that every athlete feels seen, valued, and included.
