With Ivan Nova cruising, Andrew McCutchen decided to play some outfield volleyball

Just two days after Masahiro Tanaka recorded the first "Maddux" of 2017 (a term coined by Jason Lukehart to note a shutout with fewer than 100 pitches), Ivan Nova tossed the next one as he set down the Marlins, 4-0, on Saturday night.
With Nova cruising in the ninth inning, Derek Dietrich did his best to spoil the shutout and the Maddux. After hitting a deep drive just foul down the right-field line, he straightened it out with a deep drive to center field.
Once McCutchen made the play in front of the wall, the center fielder apparently realized, "Hey, the warning track is like a very small beach. And I'm already in Miami." Sure enough, it was time for some volleyball:

Sadly for McCutchen, there were still two outs to play, so it wasn't time for a shot-for-shot recreation of "Top Gun."

Though Nova pulling off the Maddux may surprise you, it shouldn't. Since coming to the Pirates last season, he's been one of the most efficient strike-throwers in the league. After walking just three batters across 11 starts with Pittsburgh last year, he's now run his K/BB rate up to 22:1 this season. In case you're wondering, Phil Hughes set the Major League record with 11.63 K/BB ratio in 2014.
Just look at how he peppered the strike zone against the Marlins. It's proof positive of how hard it is to hit a baseball -- even when it's over the dish.

Or, if you prefer moving images:

Perhaps most shockingly, Nova's control doesn't lead the Majors, though. That belongs to Noah Syndergaard. Armed with a 93-mph slider, Syndergaard has struck out 30 batters and has yet to walk a batter.
