For Presidents' Day, here's Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez's first pitch in the 2016 World Series
Since William Howard Taft threw a ball to Walter Johnson to start the Washington Senators' season on April 14, 1910, there has been arguably no more enduring tradition of the American presidency than throwing out the first pitch at a Major League game. Every Commander in Chief since Taft has done it.
But Presidents of the United States aren't the only presidents who've earned that honor. Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez helped lead the Indians to the 1995 World Series, and when Cleveland found themselves back in the Fall Classic in 2016, they had Martinez throw out the first pitch before Game 6:
Martinez was the first Nicaraguan to appear in the big leagues, and he became an icon in his home country. After the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua led to the resignation of president Anastasio Somoza Debayle in July 1979, Martinez's Orioles teammate Ken Singleton joked that Martinez would be elected "El Presidente." (He's even been put on the ballot a couple of times.)
For someone who was over 60 years old and hadn't thrown from a Major League mound in nearly 20 years, Martinez delivered an impressive pitch. It was so impressive -- and El Presidential -- that we're going to take a moment on this Presidents' Day to remember and celebrate it.
