Miguel Cabrera's quest to tie Babe Ruth on the all-time career hits list will have to wait another day, as inclement weather at Guaranteed Rate Field forced the postponement of Wednesday’s game against the White Sox.

Cabrera entered the day with 2,872 career hits, good for No. 46 on the all-time list. Just two active players -- Cabrera and the Angels’ Albert Pujols (No. 14 on the list) -- are among the top 50. Cabrera has a ways to go before he reaches Pujols’ 3,251, but he’s within spitting distance of greats such as Mel Ott (2,876), Omar Vizquel (2,877) and Rogers Hornsby (2,930).

“These names are big, and we’re going to approach really big names with [Cabrera] if his success continues and he reaches some of these milestones,” Detroit manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday. “It’s almost intimidating just to think about all you have to do to get in the position of those, because those are names that are attached to the legacy of the entire sport.”

Cabrera was originally scheduled to have a day off on Thursday, but the 38-year-old slugger took a rain-mandated rest on Wednesday instead and will potentially be available to play either game of Thursday’s straight doubleheader.

Casey Mize, Wednesday’s scheduled starter for the Tigers, will now pitch in Game 1, which will begin at 5:10 p.m. ET. Matthew Boyd will pitch Game 2, which is scheduled to start 30 to 45 minutes after the conclusion of the first game. The White Sox will counter with Carlos Rodón in Game 1 and Dylan Cease in the nightcap.
