While the 500-homer club boasts sluggers such as Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle and Ernie Banks, the 400-homer club offers us a glimpse into one of baseball's superglues: a diversity of skills. The 400-homer club features athletic stars like the 5-foot-9 Mel Ott and the switch-hitting Chipper Jones.

It includes players who fell just short of becoming elite sluggers, sometimes because they spent a considerable portion of their careers playing their home games in large ballparks. But it also features superstars -- Carl Yastrzemski, Carlos Beltrán and Cal Ripken Jr. -- who ended up right where we guessed they would.

Giancarlo Stanton, OF/DH (2010-present)
Career HR total: 402
Hit 400th on: Sept. 5, 2023
Blessed with perhaps the most raw power of any slugger, Stanton has been hitting homers with ease since his rookie season with the Marlins in 2010. He hit 22 or more in each of his first nine seasons before injuries limited him to just 41 games -- and only seven home runs -- across 2019 and 2020. Stanton reached his peak in 2017, hitting an MLB-high 59 homers in his National League MVP campaign. He became the fourth-fastest player to reach 400 homers with a 451-foot blast against the Tigers on Sept. 5, 2023.

Nelson Cruz, RF/DH (2005-present)

Hit 400th on: Sept. 22, 2019
Cruz didn't seriously get started hitting homers until his age-28 season in 2009 with Texas, when he hit 33. Like a fine wine, Cruz's power has only gotten better with age; more than half of his first 400 homers came at age 34 and older. His 400th homer clinched his fourth career 40-homer season at age 39 with Minnesota in 2019.

Edwin Encarnación, INF/DH (2005-2020)

He began his career with the Reds and had stints with the Blue Jays -- with whom he hit 239 of his homers -- Indians, Yankees and White Sox. But it was as a Seattle Mariner that Encarnacion took a trip around the bases with his signature "walking the parrot" gesture for the 400th time.

Mark Teixeira, 1B (2003-16)

Teixeira joined the 400-homer club in his 14th and final MLB season, and he's one of the few players to club homer No. 401 in the same game. He reached the mark midway through his final season, then added nine more before hanging up his spikes.

Carlos Beltrán, CF (1998-2017)

It was the year the Yankees traded Beltrán to the Rangers at the non-waiver Trade Deadline, but he left his mark before leaving the Bronx by joining the 400-homer club in his age-39 season.

The Tigers didn't have to wait long for Cabrera's 400th homer. He crushed a solo shot in the first inning against the Cardinals on May 16, 2015, his fourth homer in three days and the most for a Venezuelan-born player.

Beltre achieved the feat during his 18th MLB season and his fifth as a Ranger. The solo shot came off veteran left-hander Bruce Chen, breaking a 2-2 tie against Cleveland in the first inning.

Soriano snapped a five-game homerless streak by going deep in consecutive at-bats against Toronto southpaw J.A. Happ. The seven-time All-Star helped lead the Yankees to a 7-1 win behind Andy Pettitte.

Dunn joined fellow White Sox slugger Paul Konerko as the only teammates in MLB history to reach the 400-homer club in the same season. Dunn's towering homer went 428 feet to left-center at Kauffman Stadium.

As America celebrated Independence Day, Boston honored Big Papi. Ortiz became the sixth player to reach 400 homers while in a Red Sox uniform and the first since Manny Ramirez in 2005.

Konerko's 400th homer was a game-tying drive in the ninth inning of a White Sox-A's game. Konerko's leadoff solo shot forced extra innings, but Oakland won it in 14.

There was no shortage of amazing highlights during Pujols' already legendary career. As his age-30 season wrapped up in 2010, he became the third-youngest player in history to hit 400 home runs. Pujols is one of just two Cardinals to accomplish the feat.

Jones became just the second player in a White Sox uniform to hit home run No. 400, joining Thomas. After the third-inning three-run shot to left off Royals right-hander Anthony Lerew, Jones moved into sole possession of 46th place on the all-time home run list, breaking a tie between Andres Galarraga and Al Kaline.

Vladimir Guerrero, RF (1996-2011)

Guerrero joined elite company when he became one of only six players to hit 400 home runs while also hitting .320 or better, accompanied by Ruth, Musial, Williams, Gehrig and Foxx.

Giambi treated the A's faithful to his 400th career homer off Dan Haren. Sporting a calm demeanor, the former American League MVP Award winner and five-time All-Star greeted his emphatic teammates at home plate like the solo shot was business as usual.

Jones became just the third switch-hitter to crank 400 career homers, joining Mantle and Murray. He also raised his batting average to a league-leading .418 at the start of June in the process.

Delgado hit a grand slam for his milestone 400th homer against the Cardinals for his second of the day. His first, a solo shot, gave the Mets an early lead, and his second, the 400th, brought the Mets within two runs.

In his 15th game as a Padre, Piazza became the only catcher to hit 400 home runs. Only six players before Piazza had hit 400 homers with a .300 career batting average without striking out at least 100 times in a season: Ruth, Gehrig, Ott, Williams, Musial and Aaron.

At 29 years and 316 days old, A-Rod was the youngest player to hit 400 home runs, and he was the only player in history to do so before his 30th birthday.

Dubbed a "speed guy" as a prospect, Sheffield had never imagined reaching the 400-homer mark. But once he did, on a towering shot to the left-field bleachers at Toronto's SkyDome, Sheffield immediately dreamed of pursuing 100 more. Homer No. 400 came on the same night as A-Rod's 370th dinger.

Thome's milestone 400th home run came after a two-hour, 18-minute rain delay. He battled back from an 0-2 count to knock a two-run jack in the first inning. Griffey was in the opposite dugout, less than a week away from collecting his 500th career homer.

A year and two days after Thomas hit the longest home run to date at Guaranteed Rate Field, he cranked his 400th shot in his 14th season for the White Sox.

Bagwell collected his 399th and 400th career homers in a 6-3 Astros win over the Reds during a Sunday matinee. Both came off right-hander Danny Graves, a former closer who was attempting to resurrect his career as a starter.

Batting cleanup behind Rodriguez, the two-time AL MVP Award winner scorched home run No. 400 to left field off Angels southpaw Jarrod Washburn in the second inning to become the 34th player to reach the mark.

Sosa appropriately slammed a 2-1 Shane Reynolds pitch into the right-field bleachers at Wrigley Field in a game the Cubs ultimately lost to the Astros. Sosa also hit his 100th, 200th and 300th homers at Wrigley.

As the 2000 season wrapped up, Palmeiro drilled his milestone homer with just six games left in the campaign.

The Devil Rays first baseman earned two milestones in three days -- slugging his 400th home run at Shea Stadium on June 2, 2000, and following up with his 2,000th career hit against the Mets two days later.

Griffey had been the youngest player to join the 400-homer club before getting dethroned by A-Rod in 2005. Griffey continued his trend of hitting milestone homers on his father's birthday, repeating the feat for the fourth time since swatting his first MLB homer in 1989 on the same date.

Cal Ripken Jr., SS/3B (1981-2001)

Hit 400th on: Sept. 2, 1999
Ripken hit his 400th home run in his 19th season as an Oriole, less than six months after his father, Cal Sr., passed away from lung cancer. Ripken received two curtain calls at Camden Yards, pointing to his mother in the stands his second time out of the dugout.

Jose Canseco, DH/OF (1985-2001)

A native of Cuba, Canseco became the first Major League player not born in the United States to reach 400 home runs. It was his third home run of the year for the Devil Rays in an eventual 7-6, extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays.

Although he didn't reach the 400-homer club until his age-33 season, Bonds clubbed 292 from 1999-2004 en route to becoming the all-time home run leader.

McGwire's first full season with the Cardinals included not only his memorable run to a new single-season homer record but also his 400th career long ball.

Andre Dawson, OF (1976-96)

The Hall of Famer notched his 400th homer in the first of two seasons he played for the Red Sox. It was a moonshot over the Green Monster at Fenway Park. Dawson became the 16th Major Leaguer with at least 2,500 hits and 400 home runs.

Eddie Murray, 1B (1977-97)

The switch-hitting Hall of Famer had a productive run with the Mets after making his mark with the Orioles. The slugging first baseman joined the 400-homer club during his 25th game repping New York.

Winfield was in a 1-for-27 slump before hitting his 400th career homer off Twins left-hander David West in his hometown of Minneapolis.

Darrell Evans, 3B/1B (1969-89)

Evans joined the 400-homer club at the expense of Cleveland right-hander and future Red Sox manager John Farrell, becoming the oldest player to reach the mark, at 41 years old. Evans retired after having joined Jackson as the second player to hit at least 100 homers for three teams.

Dave Kingman, 1B/LF (1971-86)

Hit 400th on: Aug. 10, 1985
Kingman was stuck on 399 home runs for 13 games before parking his 400th into the left-field seats off left-hander Matt Young in the first inning.

Mike Schmidt, 3B/1B (1972-89)

Schmidt was one of 12 hitters to garner at least 400 home runs while playing for one team (namely, the Phillies) during the entirety of his career.

Reggie Jackson, RF (1967-87)

Hit 400th on: Aug. 11, 1980
Jackson became the fourth player to hit his 400th home run while in a Yankees uniform, joining Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle. Jackson did it three years after being dubbed Mr. October for blasting three consecutive homers in the clinching game of the '77 World Series.

Carl Yastrzemski, LF/1B (1961-83)

Hit 400th on: July 24, 1979
This was a memorable year for Yastrzemski. He deposited his 400th shot into the visitors' bullpen in July 1979, then joined the coveted 3,000-hit club in mid-September of the same season.

Willie Stargell, LF/1B (1962-82)

Hit 400th on: June 29, 1977
In his age-36 season, Stargell became only the 17th player to join the 400-homer club. The Pirates legend launched it into to the right-field stands in a 9-1 rout over the Cardinals. A nun caught the ball, and after thanking her, Stargell traded her for a new one.

Williams was the first player to reach 400 homers while wearing an Athletics uniform, and only two more (Kingman and Giambi) have followed him thus far.

Willie McCovey, 1B/LF (1959-80)

Hit 400th on: July 15, 1973
McCovey hit his 400th and 401st home runs on the same day -- off Bob Moose and Bob Johnson in the third and fifth innings, respectively. He was the 15th player to join the 400-homer club.

Harmon Killebrew, 1B/3B/LF (1954-75)

Killebrew was the 14th player to join the 400-homer club when he accomplished the feat in 1969. It came as a Twin during his 5,300th career at-bat, when he connected off White Sox left-hander Gary Peters.

Frank Robinson, OF/1B (1956-76)

Robinson played for five teams during his 20-year career, and his 400th homer came as a member of the Orioles. (It also erased southpaw Jim Kaat's attempt at a shutout in the seventh inning.)

In his age-32 season, during which he hit his 400th homer, Aaron matched his career high with 44 long balls en route to 755 on his career.

Ernie Banks, 1B/SS (1953-71)

In front of just 5,014 fans at Wrigley Field, Banks hit his 24th home run of the season and 400th of his career during a Thursday matinee against the Cardinals. The unlucky victim? Three-time All-Star and World Series winner Curt Simmons.

The most legendary player in Giants franchise history slugged his 400th home run in Houston's Astrodome, and he was just heating up. Mays finished the year with 187 hits -- the fourth-most in his 22-year career.

Duke Snider, CF (1947-64)

Snider slugged his milestone homer for the Mets out of the horseshoe-shaped outfield of the Polo Grounds at the expense of the first-place Reds. Only eight players had connected for 400 before him -- all of them Hall of Famers. Snider joined that club in 1980.

Eddie Mathews, 3B/1B (1952-68)

Mathews played for the Braves from 1952-66, spanning the three cities the Braves called home. His 400th home run came as a Milwaukee Brave, leading the team to its fifth consecutive win.

Mickey Mantle, CF/1B (1951-68)

Mantle was the first switch-hitter in history to reach 400 home runs, and only five switch-hitters have followed suit since. The Hall of Famer was only the third Yankees player to accomplish the feat in pinstripes (following Ruth and Gehrig).

Hit 400th on: May 7, 1959
Musial was the first player in Cardinals franchise history to hit 400 home runs while donning a St. Louis uniform, and he did it in dramatic fashion. The Cubs and Cards were deadlocked 3-3 heading into the ninth before Musial blasted a leadoff walk-off homer for career shot No. 400 off reliever Don Elston.

Ted Williams, LF (1939-60)

Williams gave the Fenway faithful a special thrill in the summer of 1956, slugging homer No. 400 a half-dozen rows behind the visitors' bullpen to break up a pitchers' duel. Williams became just the fifth player in history to reach the mark.

Hit 400th on: June 1, 1941
After Ruth, Ott was the next to reach 400 home runs -- and the first in the National League. The same swing earned the Hall of Famer his 1,500th RBI. The milestone came in a 3-2 win over the Reds at the Polo Grounds.

Jimmie Foxx, 1B/3B/C (1925-45)

Hit 400th on: June 27, 1938
Foxx became the third player to garner 400 home runs, slugging it off Indians fireballer Bob Feller. Foxx also became the first batter to hit 50 or more home runs for two teams after slugging 50 for the Red Sox that year and 58 for the 1932 A's.

Lou Gehrig, 1B (1986-2004)

Gehrig hit 306 home runs from 1931 through the end of his career in '39 -- the second-highest total for that decade behind Foxx. On July 10, 1936, Gehrig joined the retired Ruth as the only players to hit 400 home runs.

The 1927 season was a special one for the mighty Bambino. Ruth became the first player in Major League history to hit 400 home runs, posting a career-high 60 dingers in the legendary '27 season.
