Rehabbing Mejia visits team in Tampa

Garver nearing return; Mauer to be honored

ST. PETERSBURG -- Long before the Twins took pregame batting practice on Friday, a lone figure was hard at work in the visitor’s bullpen.

sightings haven’t been regular lately, but Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said they’re quite welcome.

“He’s doing well,” Baldelli said. “It’s great to see him. I think he looked great physically, taking advantage of this time to build back up and lock in, feel good, and then we’ll get him out there on a rehab assignment.”

For the past few weeks, the Twins’ reliever has been working out at Minnesota’s Spring Training facility in Fort Myers, about two hours south of Tropicana Field. Mejia, who’s been nursing a right calf strain that landed him on the IL May 1, didn’t want to miss the opportunity to reconnect with his team while it was nearby.

“It feels good [to be here],” said the lefty, who also appeared as though he’d toned up while on the injured list. “I’m happy about it, and I’m spending a couple of days with them here, and I’m happy about that.”

Mejia played catch and worked off the mound Friday, and said he’s scheduled for a full bullpen session Saturday.

“I’m working on everything,” he said. “Everything with baseball, my body, everything I can do to get better to get where I was before this happened so I can come back stronger.

“It’s a little uncomfortable not being with your teammates and supporting the team and helping them win whenever you can. It’s taking a little longer than we expected, but it’s going alright.”

Garver nearing end of rehab

(left high-ankle sprain) struck out twice in three at-bats as a designated hitter for Double-A Pensacola on Thursday and was slated to play a full game behind the plate on Friday. Assuming all goes well, Baldelli said the catcher’s return is imminent.

“I think he’s feeling really good, and I think after if he gets through [Friday] like we expect him to, we’ll have another discussion very soon about when he’ll return,” he said.
