Mondesi goes above and beyond to turn DP

Two Royals infielders went for Willie Calhoun's ground ball up the middle in the third inning of Wednesday's 6-1 loss at Kauffman Stadium. One came up with it and turned a fantastic double play.

Third baseman Kelvin Gutierrez, playing on the right side of the infield with the shift on, dove for the ball, but shortstop Adalberto Mondesi cut it off with a slick slide, stepped on second and fired to first to complete the DP for the first two outs of the inning.

“What can I say? It’s instinct. It just happened," Mondesi said. "I thought I had time. I knew I was close to the bag and then just made a strong throw.”
