Jan. 7: Which teams are the biggest players for Bregman
The Blue Jays, Diamondbacks, Cubs, Red Sox and Tigers have been connected to Bregman of late, but recent events suggest his market might be tightening.
Six days ago, Toronto and Arizona appeared to be the most aggressive teams bidding for Bregman, according to reporting from MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
However, the Blue Jays have since signed Japanese third baseman Kazuma Okamoto and were said to be increasing their efforts to land outfielder Kyle Tucker on Tuesday. With a reunion between Toronto and Bo Bichette also reportedly looking “increasingly unlikely” after the Okamoto deal, it stands to reason that the chances of Bregman landing with the team have also diminished greatly.
That leaves Arizona as a major player in the Bregman sweepstakes, though that could change if the Diamondbacks take Ketel Marte off the trade market. The D-backs have fielded offers for Marte throughout the offseason, but general manager Mike Hazen said in late December that he was looking to wrap up those talks soon and indicated that a trade of the All-Star second baseman was unlikely.
While a number of teams continue to monitor Bregman’s market, multiple Major League executives believe the three-time All-Star will ultimately return to Boston, per Feinsand. A recent ESPN report suggested that the Red Sox “have signaled a willingness” to give Bregman a big deal in the range of the six-year, $171.5 million offer the Tigers made the third baseman a year ago. The Tigers have retained interest in him, though they haven’t shown any indication that they would be willing to make the type of offer they did last year.
The Cubs have also been interested in Bregman since last offseason, though sources believe Chicago is unlikely to be the highest bidder when all is said and done. Another AL executive won’t count out the Cubs, however, saying he sees Boston and Chicago as “the biggest players” for Bregman.
Jan. 2: Red Sox make 'aggressive offer' to Bregman (report)
Is Bregman likely to return to the Red Sox? ESPN's Buster Olney thinks so. He said during Friday's edition of "First Up with Korolnek and Colaiacovo" in Toronto that he thinks a Red Sox-Bregman reunion will happen and then reported that Boston has made "an aggressive offer" to the star third baseman.
The Red Sox's desire to re-sign Bregman has been consistently reported throughout the offseason. But there have been a handful of other clubs linked to him, and sources told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that the Blue Jays and D-backs may be the two most aggressive clubs in the hunt. However, Feinsand adds that no team has been willing to give Bregman the long-term deal he seeks.
The particulars of the Red Sox's offer are unknown. Bregman signed a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston prior to last season. The contract contained opt-outs after each of the first two seasons, and Bregman did opt out of his deal in November.
Jan. 1: 4 teams reportedly showing interest in Bregman
After a strong 2025 season in Boston, Bregman has been linked to the Red Sox throughout the offseason. However, MLB Network insider Jon Heyman writes in the New York Post (subscription required) that there are at least three other clubs in the market for the 31-year-old third baseman. Specifically, Heyman reports that the D-backs, Cubs and Blue Jays have "keen interest" in Bregman.
The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal (subscription required) recently characterized Arizona and Toronto as "legitimate suitors" for the three-time All-Star.
Dec. 20: Will Jays make a push for Bregman?
Bregman has been a popular free-agent target for several clubs, which is no surprise. But according to a report in The Athletic (subscription required), you can add the defending AL champions to the list of teams with serious interest in the veteran third baseman. While the Blue Jays have been rumored to be trying to re-sign shortstop Bo Bichette and have been linked heavily to Kyle Tucker, Bregman appears to be more than just a backup plan in case Toronto can't sign either Tucker or Bichette.
"Ideally, the Jays want to add a left-handed hitter, but either the right-handed Bregman or Bichette would fit their defensive alignment better than Tucker or Cody Bellinger, both of whom bat left," writes Ken Rosenthal in The Athletic report, in which he also notes that Bregman's leadership in the clubhouse could be a determining factor.
With former Astros teammates George Springer and Myles Straw on Toronto's roster, one could certainly see Bregman joining the Jays, who have already been busy this offseason as they look to strike while the iron is hot following their finest campaign in decades. If Bregman was to sign with Toronto, that would likely mean Ernie Clement becomes primarily a second baseman and Addison Barger a full-time outfielder.
Dec. 16: This NL club has entered the mix for Bregman (report)
A new contender has emerged in the sweepstakes for Bregman: The D-backs have expressed interest in the star third baseman, according to a report by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman on Tuesday.
The incumbent Red Sox and the Cubs have been the teams most strongly linked to Bregman so far this offseason, but Arizona has a vacancy at third base that the three-time All-Star could fill. Bregman is said to be Boston's "No. 1 target," while Chicago reportedly had a video meeting with Bregman earlier in the offseason.
If Arizona's interest is serious, it remains to be seen how a potential trade involving D-backs second baseman Ketel Marte could impact things. The Red Sox are one of several suitors for Marte, so if Bregman does sign with Arizona, the two star infielders could be swapping sides from 2025.
Dec. 9: Cubs had video meeting with Bregman (report)
The Cubs reportedly made a four-year offer to Bregman last offseason before he ultimately signed with the Red Sox, and it seems they are back in the mix for the third baseman.
The Athletic (subscription required) recently reported that the North Siders were showing "renewed interest" in the three-time All-Star, and on Tuesday, FanSided's Robert Murray reported that the Cubs had a Zoom meeting with Bregman several weeks ago. Murray hears that Bregman has had "several" Zoom meetings with other teams.
The prospect of losing free agent Kyle Tucker's production at the plate could be behind the club's interest in Bregman. Although he missed some time due to injury in 2025, Bregman posted an .822 OPS with 18 home runs for Boston and has an impressive track record.
With incumbent third baseman Matt Shaw still finding his bearings at the Major League level, as well as Moisés Ballesteros -- the organization's No. 2 prospect (No. 53 overall) -- just having made his big league debut last season, the Cubs may need to consider external augmentation in order to make up for the lost offense if Tucker signs elsewhere.
Dec. 8: Tigers' interest in Bregman 'lukewarm' (report)
With Bregman back on the free-agent market, many have wondered whether the Tigers would pursue him again. Detroit was one of Bregman's top suitors last offseason and even made him a six-year, $171.5 million offer before he signed a shorter deal with the Red Sox that allowed him to opt out after 2025.
According to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers still like Bregman, who spent the first four seasons of his career playing for current Detroit manager A.J. Hinch in Houston. However, Petzold notes that the Tigers' interest in signing Bregman is "lukewarm" at this point.
The uncertainty surrounding ace Tarik Skubal might also make Bregman hesitant to join the Tigers. Even if Skubal isn't traded this offseason, his potential departure as a free agent after 2026 would seriously diminish Detroit's chances of competing for a World Series title in '27 and beyond.
