Claudio placed on DL with left ankle sprain

July 14th, 2018

BALTIMORE -- Lefty reliever was put on the 10-day disabled list Saturday, retroactive to Thursday, due to a left ankle sprain he suffered earlier in the week.
Claudio is 4-2 and has a 0.96 ERA in his last seven games. Manager Jeff Banister said he expects Claudio to be fine after a few days rest, and that this isn't serious. The injury happened on Tuesday.
"[When] coming off the mound [Tuesday] in Boston, rolled it a little bit," Banister said. "[We] tried to be conservative with him the first two days. Got two days left, no need to push it, and plus it will give him some early time down."
Overall, Claudio has a 4.32 ERA in 38 games in relief and can be activated July 21.
Also, the Rangers released outfielder . The 31-year-old came to the team from the Giants in a trade on July 8 and was designated for assignment three days later.
DeShields back in lineup
returned to the starting lineup for the first time since Wednesday. He got hurt in Boston in that game and left in the sixth inning. DeShields passed concussion protocol Friday and was able to be used in that win as a late-inning defensive replacement and made a tough sliding catch in center.

"He's good; he was cleared to play," Banister said. "It was nice to be able to have him as an option. He's good to go tonight. It's nice to get him back out there."
The Rangers now are hoping DeShields' bat comes out of its recent slump. DeShields entered Saturday's game mired in an 0-for-23 skid, the longest of his career. His last hit came on July 4 against the Astros.
Overall, he is 2-for-32 in the first 10 games of July, and his batting average has fallen from .232 to .212.
