HRDX Superstars Hugo and Lansdell show off skills for USWNT

August 5th, 2022

One month ago, they were enemies -- playing in London and bashing home runs into Crystal Palace Park as members of the Dodgers and Cubs. Next month, they'll renew that rivalry when FTX MLB Home Run Derby X heads to Seoul, South Korea, for the second stop on the global tour.

But last week, Ashton Lansdell (Dodgers) and Alex Hugo (Cubs) joined up as teammates for the U.S. Women's National Team. The team, which took home gold at its most recent tournament at the 2019 Pan-American Games, was back together for a five-game friendly series against Canada.

The duo picked up where they left off. Hugo, who smashed 14 home runs at the London HRDX and earned MVP honors at the 2019 Pan-American Championships, stayed hot during the five-game series against Canada. Though her numbers weren't as eye-popping as in '19, the second baseman went 6-for-19 (.316 batting average) with 5 runs scored and 3 RBIs, including two multi-hit performances in Game 2 and 3 of the friendly series.

Lansdell, who was called up to the USWNT in 2018 at only 17 years old, showed off the extra-base prowess that made her such a dangerous hitter at HRDX (15 home runs, 21 total points). Lansdell went 7-for-17 (.412) with 1 double, 4 triples(!), 7 runs, and 6 RBIs in the series, including a 4-for-5 game with two triples in the series opener.

Together, they helped the USWNT win the series, 3-2, outscoring Canada 42-21. They'll be back in action for HRDX on Sept. 17, hoping to help their teams climb the standings. Lansdell's Dodgers are currently in third-place with one point, while Hugo's Cubs are in last.
