This Simmons catch will make your jaw drop

May 7th, 2019

When is on the field, there is no such thing as "no man's land" for a ball to drop.

The Angels' four-time Gold Glove Award winner (and one-time Platinum Glove honoree) ranged into short center field in the bottom of the sixth inning at Comerica Park in Tuesday night's 5-2 win to take a hit away from Tigers third baseman Jeimer Candelario. With his back to the infield, Simmons caught the ball while falling to the grass for a spectacular out, the first of the inning.

The play may have helped prevent Detroit from scoring more than two runs in the frame. JaCoby Jones had led off with a double ahead of Candelario. Los Angeles held a 4-2 lead after six, with Simmons responsible for one of the runs on an RBI single in the third.

Simmons added an insurance run with an RBI single in the ninth, giving the Angels their final margin of victory.
