D-backs left-hander Andrew Chafin was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left finger sprain prior to Wednesday night’s game against the A’s.

To replace Chafin, Arizona selected the contract of left-hander Matt Grace from their alternate training site.

Grace, 31, appeared in 178 games for the Nationals over the past five seasons, posting a 4.29 ERA. He was a non-roster invite to Spring Training with the D-backs this year, and the club put him on its taxi squad for this five-game road trip against the A's and Giants.

Chafin was 1-1 with an 8.10 ERA in 11 games this year.

Bumgarner to throw again
Left-handed starter Madison Bumgarner will throw a bullpen session Thursday, then the club will evaluate what his next step will be.

Bumgarner, who is on the 10-day injured list with a mid-back strain, threw 46 pitches in a simulated game Monday.

“He will once again be evaluated and give some feedback,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said of the next step after Bumgarner's bullpen session. “And one thing that we know and we're very comfortable with is his ability to give us the right feedback. So I don't know what happens beyond [Thursday], but once he gives us that feedback and gets through that bullpen and we're feeling like it's going be a very good day, we'll start to drum up the next part of the plan.”

Bumgarner has already missed one start and he'll miss his second on Thursday, with left-hander Alex Young taking his place in both. When Bumgarner was initially placed on the IL, the club said that he would likely miss a pair of starts.

Martin out
D-backs right-hander Corbin Martin has a strained left oblique muscle, will not pitch for a “few weeks" and then will be re-evaluated, according to general manager Mike Hazen.

Martin, the No. 7 prospect in Arizona's farm system per MLB Pipeline, was acquired at the Trade Deadline last season as part of the blockbuster that sent Zack Greinke to Houston.

Martin had Tommy John surgery last July, and his recovery by all accounts has gone very well. He remains a member of the D-backs' 60-man player pool roster for 2020, and he's been playing at the team’s alternate training site, where he suffered the injury during an outing last week.
